Inside Guide to Brighton & Hove The Jack and Jill windmills |
HOW TO GET THERE For the energetic, the windmills can be reached by climbing to the top of Ditchling Beacon and turning West along the South Downs Way (approx 2-3 miles). For the mildly energetic, take the train to Hassocks, and walk back (South) out of town for about 30 minutes. The Windmills are sign-posted and you get to see the magnificent entrance to the Clayton railway tunnel. Alternatively drive, taxi, or beg a lift from someone!

"The Jack and Jill windmills are set in a beautiful location, high on the South Downs, but they are more than just a pretty sight. Jill is a fully restored Post Mill, originally built in Brighton in 1821 and moved to its present location in 1852. The guided tours are very informative, and the tea shop is cheap 'n' cheerful with lots of home-made goodies. The Windmills are open to the public every Sunday afternoon from April to September (weather permitting), and entrance is free, though donations to the Jack and Jill Windmill Society are accepted!"
